CHAPTER 17

“Sir, we’ve got something.”

“What is it?” Chocub asked from the command chair of the emperor’s ship. He’d had just gotten back from the D361 scouter vessel and wanted some good news. Earlier, he’d ordered ID9’s ship brought to the emperor for further study, having not yet learned anything.

“In the main city, Derolan, on Yenovia,” Officer Tela said. “An alien went to a gambling joint. When they scanned his signature before going in, nothing came up. No identification tag.”

Chocub leaned back in his chair. “Was there an error somewhere?”

“No, sir. After we got word, we sent the marines to that location. They analyzed everything and checked all the video feeds. Whoever that alien is, he’s not from this part of space,” Tela said.

“Did we track down where he went?”

“Not yet. He’s apparently with two other aliens. We’re searching for them.”

Chocub hit the comm button. “Officer Strauts, get over here.”

A minute later, Strauts appeared on the bridge.

“Sir,” Strauts said, getting used to his new position as an officer, no longer a scouter-ship captain.

“Send the rest of our marines to Yenovia. Also, I need you to monitor everything onboard the bridge and report back to me every four hours.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I’ll be back in a bit. Everyone, carry on. And let me know if you find anything else.”

The bridge crew saluted Chocub as he exited for his office. Once inside, Chocub took a seat and opened his display. He scrolled through his files until he found the one titled Yenovia History. He spent the next hour glossing over the material. Once satisfied, he sent a ping to his AI.

“Yes, General,” the AI echoed.

“Get me Doctor Krad.” An acknowledgement icon appeared on his desk. Two minutes later, a short, skinny alien in a white garment appeared.

“General Chocub. You requested me, sir?” Krad asked. The alien looked tired, probably due to the countless hours he and his team were enduring, researching the ring and everything else. Krad also looked a little skeptical as to why the general had personally requested him in his office.

Chocub pulled out two glasses and a green bottle from his drawer. He filled them both to the brim and handed one to Krad. They lifted their drinks and took a long pull.

“Doctor, I have a few questions regarding the people of Yenovia.” Chocub said. Krad’s demeanor loosened, seeing this was a conversation about his knowledge, and not something more worrisome. “What do you know about some of the ancient beliefs and customs there?”

“I’ve been studying ancient civilization for a long time. The planet Yenovia was always a unique place, one where their worshipping traits have not really changed in the last thousand star years. There are many tribal viewpoints, of course, across that planet, each with different thoughts on life and philosophy. But I have a feeling you want to talk about the temple people.” Krad smiled.

Chocub nodded. “I’ve been reading about them. I must admit, I used to think that due to their ancient customs, their style was outdated and not worth my time.
